The parts that wear, and why climate matters

These are the systems behind most vehicle service contract claims. Figures are general estimates from the publications on the Sources page, not promises about your vehicle.

Battery & charging

Heat shortens battery life more than cold does. Midtronics, a battery-testing company, estimates normal-use life near 55 months in cold climates, 45 in mild, 40 in hot and 30 in extreme heat. Cold often just exposes a battery that heat already weakened.

Ask about

Whether the battery counts as a covered part or a wear item. For electrics, heat speeds up battery wear.

Engine, cooling & A/C

Stop-and-go heat loads the radiator, water pump, A/C compressor and condenser. Engine and transmission are the largest single repairs and are the core of most plans.

Ask about

Whether cooling and A/C sit in your plan level, and whether towing or hauling is limited.

Underbody & brake lines

In states that salt roads heavily, corrosion hits the chassis, brake and suspension parts. A vehicle that spent years in a salt-belt state can carry that corrosion with it after a move.

Ask about

Whether corrosion is excluded, which it commonly is, and where the vehicle spent its life.

Electronics & sensors

Screens, control modules and driver-assist sensors are common claims on newer vehicles. How a plan is written matters: named-component plans cover only listed parts, while exclusionary plans cover everything not excluded.

Ask about

Whether your electronics are named in the contract, and what is excluded.

Collision, theft, hail and flood damage are insurance matters, not service contract matters. A service contract covers listed parts that fail from wear, not damage from an accident or a storm.
